I have a D80 which I use in conjunction with an Akai DPS12 to get extra tracks. I like it, but it has limited sync capability over midi .. it must always be the Master device. Therefore, I don't know how you would sync a second D80 to the first if you wanted to record/play 16 tracks together .. you'd probably have to make the second one a D90 which CAN slave sync, I believe.
Sound-wise, I agree with Silent Bob. I have made A/B comparisons on the same material recorded simultaneously on a Tascam 238 8 track cassette, and the T238 wins every time for brightness and 'punch' to the sound. If it wasn't for the shortcomings in the media, I'd use the cassette every time.
