If you are looking for some "color" to take the "digital"
out of your hard drive. Probably any used (or new, there are some inexpensive ones our there) tube mic pre
(even an old tape head preamp from the 50s or 60s)
will do. However, do NOT confuse this with putting the
voice on tape as accurately as possible. If you want
to go under $500, you'd best find a channel from
a 70's discrete (NO chips or IC's) board (with PSU,
of course, unless it matches up to your existing PSU.
By the way, my experience has been that just about
anything "tube" (unless it's running horribly or something),
will give "character" and make something sound like it
"belongs" in the mix.
