If you have a preference as to where you buy your
gear, start by asking them if they do price
compares against catalogs or other retailers.

I recently got 3 Celestion Greenbacks for $78
each from Parts Express in OHIO because I asked
them to match the price Carvin.com was selling
them for. They agreed and I got a few jealous
emails from some other suppliers who said THEY
couldn't even get them for less than $90.
So it pays to shop around and ask if someone
would be willing to match a particular price
in order to get your business. But don't lie
about an advertised price! That'll get you in
pretty hot water! Most places want hard evidence
about the price you found, so be ready with a
fax or a piece of paper.

The other thing I have found about local retailers
is that brick & mortar stores are almost always
more expensive than "buy in bulk" places like
Musicians Friend and many e-retailers. Take
advantage of a good price if you find it in
a local shop. You save in shipping and you get
that local "touch".

Personally, I haven't seen the Danelectro line
prices, although the $399 does seem reasonable.

Try the old "used car" routine. Come into the
shop with $350 in cold hard cash and wave it in
thier face and say "it's all I have to spend"
and see if they take the bait. I have done
that before and I got a nice Kramer for $150
when the tag was $250 ... they wanted the sale
bad enough so they took my money. ha-ha-ha!

From a more personal level, the new Danelectros
are not REAL Danelectro's though. The old ones
sounded different - obviously b/c of the plywood
bodies and difference in pickups back then ...
but even though those old things were built very
poorly ... they sounded GREAT (especially those
old baritone guitars! -) -> Eddie Van Halen
actually had Ernie Ball recreate the EXACT sound
of those old Danelectros into a double-necked
baritone/std guitar for playing "SPANKED" live
on the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge tour and
rumor has it that the body is actually two types
of wood (Basswood for the standard EVH side and
a plywood press for the baritone side) both
topped with a figured maple ... drool ... drool.

Good luck - no matter what you buy!
Eddie
