To be honest, I dont yet know how actual instruments and voice interact with MIDI. Yes, most DAW systems have some level of MIDI involved and it's connection to individual instruments may be for things like effects. I know my Midiverb has the MIDI in and Thu options on it so that you can send channel information to it to change the reverb and such. That channel change information is recorded right onto the recording track on the sequencer so that at the right time, the channel on the effects processor changes. Seems like a powerful tool. However, MIDI is based around channels and sequencer voices and since you have a digitized voice that was created naturally (as opposed to a sequencer voice), I dont think you can treat it like MIDI information, since there is no source to send it to. You would get your voice into the DAW by recording it, and encoding it with A/D converters, and then it is put onto a specific track in your computer seqencer (Cubase VST, Protools...). From that point you can maipulate the voice by cutting, pasting, pitch shifting...all sorts of stuff. I am planning on writing an article on the value of MIDI and DAWs once I get through this class.
