My singer is a female blues/jazz type. I've found the Shure KSM32 to work well for her. It has various roll off and pattern options. With her, mic technique is key because she has a pretty big dynamic range. At one point she'll be singing low, soft, and breathy, and then she'll hit the chorus and open up the pipes all the way. Also, rolling off the lower mids in the mix does wonders. (you didn't mention the gender of the singer, but since my experience is mostly with female vocalists.....)
