You mouth the words into some tube or something, and play on your synth. The result sounds like synthetic cyborgs singing your tune...great for folks who play better than they sing. Herbie Hancock used one. I believe some sort of vocorder is responsible for the synth effects on Cher's voice on "Do You Believe in Life After Love".
