I'm a cheap dutchman, so here's what I did pay
and what I would pay & why:4 years ago I payed $1400 for a TASCAM mixer
(24 channel) and a TSR-8 with only 20 hours
use on it. The unit was in MINT condition and
used in a CA recording studio as a backup/demo
unit once they bought thier 24 track/2 inch
machine (STUDER).Depending on condition, I would pay $700 - $900
for a TSR-8 and $500 - $600 for a TASCAM 38.
Why would I go lower on the 38? Well, in my
opinion the 38 is the better unit b/c its built
like a TANK (literally!) - but the unit suffers
from an inherent overheating problem which can
get you into trouble if you're not aware of it.
If I were you and you bought that TASCAM 38, I
would pull the back case off it and drill it
full of holes so the thing can breathe a little
better - or rack mount the thing without its
back at all. The unit must breathe! The TSR-8 is a plastic cousin of the 38 and is
in all intensive purposes the same unit, but
it is prone to a little more wear & tear issues
than the 38 is (in my opinon). I love the
1/2" 8 track format.Oh, and don't expect TASCAM to give you ANY
help with these units. When I called them
originally when I was looking at buying a 38,
they literally told me "you're a fool for buying
one of those things! Get a new digital unit &
you'll be much happier!" - I was shocked that
they would tell me to my face that I was a fool!
Rest assured - TASCAM will be of no help.If you can get a repair manual with the 38,
do it!Lots of luck.

P.S. This is just my opinon and I'm sure some one
will disagree with me. If I were a prophet with
all the answers, you'd see me on TV with
Pat Robertson!
