Digital audio sounds like it's underwater |

My initial attempts at recording from tape to wav file via my cheap-ass soundcard (ESS) are really lame. I used this thing called AIPL Singulator to create the wav file and at various input and output levels. It produces nothing but crap. I noticed the same thing when I tried to play mp3 files thru musicmatch. Other sound files do fine though. I hope this sounds like a known problem to you guys and you have some type of magic I can apply to fix it.
I also tried to use cakewalk to record from tape but not being a rocket scientist I was unable to figure it out. Oh well. I'll get there eventually - one difficult painful step at a time. When I do - watch out!
Thanks for any and all help.
