From a mastering stand point, I only do to a project what I think it needs. Compressing in mastering is mainly for evening out levels between the different tracks and to add some "common thread". If the tunes are pretty close level wise, I may not even compress at all.
I prefer people not to compress final mixes because they tend to approach the songs one at a time and the levels between songs are still different and may need to be compressed again by me. I'm not an expert on compressing during tracking by any means, but I like to set up a compressor mainly to catch peaks before they hit the destination. Low threshold, moderate ratio... don't want the thing to kick in except on higher db's. I then compress for effect on mixdown if the tracks need it. I usually don't compress individual final mixes. hope that helps..????
