Using more than one kick and snare (for example) in your custom drumsets, either layered together or played separately, to sound as if the same drum is getting hit slightly differently at times. And I think Seymour means "quantization" (the function that make sure the beats fall at regular intervals) when he says "syncopation" (sorry if I'm wrong Seymour!)
