about a year ago I read an article where a group tested several burners at various speeds and checked the error rates- turns out older burners did create more errors at higher speeds, but burners made within the last few years actually had a lower error count at 2x than 1x, and some even had a lower error count at 4x than 2x. Having said that, try one at a slower speed to see if it makes any difference for you.

What discs are you using? How old is your portable? How did the data get into your machine? Was it transferred via S/PDIF, recorded directly into the computer from analog, or ripped from another CD?? Is this a CD you've created or are you copying a CD that you or someone else made previously?

Try TDK discs... universally very few folks seem to have problems with them.

Have you defragged?

Adaptec's software has been known to be problematic with some combonations of gear... however my friend across town has the 8100/Adaptec combo and he's burning with no problems.

Most often burn problems are the result of poor quality discs. Remember, even with everything you can do to make a disc work there will always be the odd player that won't accept a burned disc, no matter what. You really can't guarantee 100% playback reliability on CDR's.
