Cool. Hope these aren't too many questions, but...

So the software packages come with sound cards, as well as sound cards coming with software? I guess I'm wondering where to plug the microphones--I look at pictures of these soundcards and wonder what the hell you're supposed to plug into them, you know? All these RCA and funky digital inputs...JR, are you actually tracking with the four track or using it as a mixer?

My needs are this: recording mostly from acoustic sources (non-midi); I don't need more than four ins (to record 4 simultaneous tracks)/outs (e.g. are 2 for monitor and 2 for outboard gear?) at a time; recording, editing (does this entail mastering as well?), and sequencing; professionally "releasable" sound quality. If that makes sense. Also wondering about taking the final mix through to the final CD burn. Do these software packages we're talking about (Cakewalk, Sound Forge, CEP, etc.) have a mastering and/or CD burning component? Or would you recommend burning a master mix and taking it elsewhere for mastering? Thank you all for your time and help!
