hi im using a les paul with p90 single coil pickups. running the guitar direct sounds dry and un inspiring. it's squeeky clean and fully dynamic, but not shimmery. the reason i mentioned putting a good tube in the art compressor is that when i replaced the tubes in my marshall 800 from groove tubes to vintage telefunkens it completly changed the sound of the amp giving it a life it had never had before. the telefunken tubes added gobbs of glassy shimmery ringy bell-y goodness while NOT making the amp any warmer sounding. that up grade in sound, with tubes only, leads me to believe that i can get that sound without speakers. i dont get the "tube warmth" desire craze. maybe the telefunken tubes add that upper harmonic stuff that i'm looking for. we'll see. im looking for a squeeky clean sound that might be associated with some ska and disco clean sounds. i went back and listened to a mono home video from some gigs using that said marshall and you can hear the shimmer even at that quality. curious.
