"The AMD Athalon is a 1GHz chip. It's basically a reversed engineered PIII with a built in overdrive."

Actually, the Athlon is nothing like a reverse engineered PIII. Athlons were designed completely de novo, albeit based on the x86 specs and hence compatible with the same software running on a Pentium. This is why the Athlon floating point performance is significantly better than the PIII. The Athlon and the newest incarnation of the PIII (PIIIE=133 MHz bus) are both plenty fast. If you are planning to build a computer, the Athlon setup will be faster and way cheaper. And as the other posts suggest, whenever a new CPU comes out (e.g. 1 GHz) it eventually drives down the price on the older chips. You can buy a 700 MHz Athlon CPU for $247, whereas a 700 MHz PIII CPU will cost you $439, (1 GHz Athlon CPU for ~$1300) and the PIII will be just a bit slower as well as more costly. Basically, an Athlon or a PIIIE will work great for you, but you should be able to get more bang for your buck from the Athlon. If you're buying a pre-built system instead of building your own, look for a 600 MHz or faster computer with either Athlon or PIIIE, whichever is a better deal. Fast and big hard drives and lots of RAM are important also.
