I'm not sure if I can help. Just wanted you to get some reply! Seems like you've tried what I would have tried, but I have a question / comment or two.
Your multitrack... sometimes they have a line / mic switch. You'd definately want it to be in the mic position if you're not getting a hot enough signal.
Don't know about the Audio Buddy, but if it's causing noise, a better quality preamp would obviously do better. I was thinking one of those Behringer or Mackie mixers (the little ones) might be a good choice. Adapt the 1/8" plug to 1/4" and then go out from there to the recorder.
I'm wondering how noisy the signal is to begin with. If you're recording at home, perhaps you should try it at work, or at a friend's house to see if your wiring / Phone company is the source of a lot of the extraneous noise.
