You probably answered your own question. If you've "never been able to get any thing sounding real and good from; couple of korg efx" then don't use em! Direct clean guitar will tend to sound flat and dead although you might be able to use tube DIs, sansamps, etc to get something nice. For airy clean guitar I use an amp with a omni condenser at 3-4 feet. Tube mic pres can sound cool, but solid state stuff like Great River pres can sound squeaky clean. I don't like close 57s for clean guitars, they always seem grainy to me. Keep experimenting.
