I used to have a TASCAM 388, it is 1/4" tape, allowed punch in, but, more often than not you would get this heinous glitch in there, best way to describe it would be a very quick "Static" type noise. If using distorted guitars, not too noticeable, until, I developed better ears - now I shrill to listen to older recordings I did cause I can hear all the punch in attempts.

Now I have a DA-38 and you can't hear shit. THe only way you screw it up is if you don't have the same setup obviously. But if you correct mistakes on the spot as you are tracking, or, what I've successfully done is parts I'm unsure of I'll store the scene on the mixer and record my entire setup so I can duplicate it later and have done seamless punch ins.

As for vocals, never. I'll do line by line corrections, but I've tried punch ins and unless you are EXACTLY the same spot (doubtful) and exactly the same voice inflection, well, the punch in will work fine but you will notice a sound differential. IF I make a small mistake I'll just retake that whole line.

Shit I only have 8 tracks, can't be filling up tracks with multiple takes then run a composite so the punch in is a valuable and necessary tool to me.
