Cheaper condensor mics have a tendancy to clip between 100dB and 120dB. Dynamic mics normally don't clip till 120-150dB. Most likely, it's your mic pres that are clipping from input overload. Yes, if the input is too hot, it can cause clipping even if the output is OK. You probably don't even need a mic pre if you're playing that loud. You might try backing your mic up if it's the mic itself. You should also perform tests on your ewuipment to see where the clipping is comming from. First test your sound card, then your mixer, then the pre amp, and check the mic last to find out exacly what's causing distortion.
