I used to do a lot of punching until I got rid of my 4 track. After that, I didn't have the ability on my live-to-VHS setup or my computer setup. I do have that capability on my new old 8-track but I haven't had the need yet. It really doesn't matter what you use for a pedal as long as it isn't one of those click switches. I used a keyboard sustain pedal on my 4-track. One thing you need to look out for, is faint clicking sounds, so do your corrections while other tracks are playing and it takes some time for the tape to get from the erase head to the record head so it's best to play along with the track you want to change, hit the switch about 1/2 second before a beat and you shouldn't have any problems.
