I'm not familiar with those two mics you listed. Maybe someone that knows them better could shed some light. If they are condenser mics, clipping is usually avoided by the built in pad many mics have. Like a -10db or -20db pad so they won't get overloaded. But an SM57 would probably be the ticket. I've never heard of anyone being able to overload an SM57! If you then run the mic into a preamp, clipping can occur there if you have the gain set too high. Then clipping can occur at a third place when going to digital tape/hard drive if the levels are set too high. In this case it's probably the mic that is causing it.
